In just the last week, we are seeing growing pressure on our Federal and State governments to release the evidence that supports the health advice which says we need to lockdown. As of now, Victoria is into lockdown 6.0+, QLD has had its third lockdown and NSW is about nine weeks into a lockdown that has no end in sight. This has led to numerous high-level political figures to call for a Royal Commission into the government’s handling of the pandemic, and we will only see this drumbeat louder.
When probed about what he thinks of a Royal Commission, Prime Minister Scott Morrison was evasive:
“I’m just focused on the response we need to make now,”
“I’m not going to be drawn into those things. There’ll be a time and a place to have those discussions – it’s not now.” (SBS 2021)1
A Royal Commission will have to uncover the scientific evidence that our health bureaucrats and politicians have relied upon so heavily to keep us locked down and that’s what Scott Morrison is worried about.
So why would our Prime Minister be cold to the idea of a Royal Commission into the handling of the pandemic? Any organisation with an interest in becoming better always conducts post-activity reports, debriefs and the like. They do this to work out what they did well and what they did poorly so they can improve processes and the like to ensure next time around they don’t make the same mistakes. For some reason, in this instance, the focus seems to be on ignoring or subverting any critique on the governments’ actions throughout the pandemic. Our Federal and State governments are fearful of what a Royal Commission will uncover. Using its coercive powers to summon witness testimony under oath and summon documents, a Royal Commission will uncover the “health advice” that has destroyed our way of life without any substantive health benefit. It will be shown that the evidence that supports the health advice is either non-existent or unproven.
It’s clear that there is a growing chorus of high-level politicians and scientists who are questioning the legitimacy of the “health advice” being touted by our leaders to support lockdowns. One such figure is former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott. In an interview on 11th Aug 21 with The Institute of Public Affairs (IPA 2021)2, Tony Abbott clearly demonstrated a concern over the validity of the health advice by the fact that none has been presented from our government to the people that support such measures. In his words “safety first is sometimes a dispiriting dictum” and suggested that we need to live our life to its fullest and hence get on with learning to live with the virus and not be locked down. He also went so far as to support a Royal Commission to find out what we did right and what we did wrong. But reading between the lines and knowing the powers of a Royal Commission we can see that this would uncover the real “health advice” which if our Federal and State governments had any faith, it would be more than happy to present to us. But instead, they’re waiting for us to pry it open through political and public willpower.
Repeatedly, our Federal and State governments have ignored requests to release the evidence that supports the health advice to lockdown. And that’s because it either doesn’t exist or it’s faulty.
More and more scientists are coming out to the contrary providing evidence that demonstrates lockdowns either create more harm than good or that their effect is greatly overstated. In one such instance Professor Karl Friston, a statistician ranked as the most influential in the world by Science Magazine, claims that government interventions, such as lockdowns, are not the defining factor in differentiating the impact that Covid has between countries. Rather it can be traced more to biological markers such as natural T-cell levels between different populations (Freddie Sayers 2020)3.
We are seeing more and more evidence to counter the effect of lockdowns in the public domain but we aren’t seeing any evidence come out of our governments to support the effectiveness of lockdowns over the generational damages that they are causing.
