Australia’s new DIRECTOR ID? What to do!

There is now an ASIC requirement to have a director identification number (director ID) if you’re a director of a company, a registered Australian body, a registered foreign company, or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation.  For most people, the date by which they must apply for a Director ID is 30 November 2022.

They are encouraging people to apply via the myGovID app, but we didn’t want to do that. Maybe you don’t want to either.

So here is the other options;

Firstly, to apply by phone or mail, you will need:

  • an individual Australian tax file number (TFN) – providing your TFN is optional but it speeds up the process
  • your residential address as held by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO)
  • answers to 2 questions based on details we know about you
  • 2 Australian identity documents – one primary and one secondary.

BY PHONE – Call 1300 287 539. Press ‘1’ and either wait for them to answer or request a callback. They can do the whole application with you over the phone.

However, I didn’t want to do that either, so I requested a paper version. They claim to only have this option for people living overseas, but I am using this anyway and I’m sure it will be fine.

BY MAIL – go HERE. Fill it all in on the computer if you want, and then print it out to sign. Where it says ‘what is your home address outside Australia,’ I put this.

  1. Question: what happens if you don’t do this at all? Will they close your company? Appoint a new director? Something tells me they can’t do anything. An I right?
